What Is A Financial Coach?

What Is A Financial Coach?

I've come to realize moving into my journey of financial coaching that there is a lot of confusion involving various type of finance professionals. Often times, when I share that I am working towards becoming a financial coach, people ask if I can do their taxes, manage their Quickbooks, or set up some kind of insurance.

While at some point I hope to be more helpful in those areas through my education into financial planning (a completely different kind of financial professional!), those specific topics are not what financial coaches focus on.

What Is A Financial Coach?

Simply put, "the goal of a financial coach is to educate clients on the basics of personal finance and, as a team, create a spending plan that reflects the values and goals of the client. The coach then empowers clients to take responsibility for their decisions, supports their continual learning and growth, and serves as an accountability partner throughout the process." (Philbin, Garrett. (2017, March 20) What Is Financial Coaching, And Best Practices For Becoming One. Retrieved from http://www.kitces.com).

What Do Financial Coaches Focus On?

Topics that financial coaches focus on are addressing financial issues, focusing on where to reduce or redirect spending, creating a  budget/spending plan that works, debt management and payoff, building an emergency fund, give guidance and emotional support, and most importantly, dreaming big. Financial coaches are your accountability partner in working towards financially healthier life. They are with you both in tough and good times giving you the education and hope to cultivate a life you desire for yourself as well as for your family!

When Should I Hire A Financial Coach?

A majority of the time, we don't even know we need a financial coach; the truth is with 78% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, education surrounding personal finance is sorely needed. If you feel like you can't get a handle on your finances, there is more month left than there is money, or you've got excess debt outside of a mortgage, likely, you may need to consider hiring a financial coach.
